The Germany Opportunity Card is a brand-new, points-based residence permit for non-EU nationals who want to come to Germany to search for a job or start work—even without a prior job offer. Introduced by the German government in 2024, the Chancenkarte aims to attract global talent in skilled and semi-skilled professions, making it easier than ever to start your career in Germany.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Germany Opportunity Card, you must:

  • Be a non-EU citizen (e.g. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, African, Middle Eastern, etc.)
  • Hold at least a recognized university degree OR a vocational training certificate equivalent to German standards
  • Have basic German (A1) OR English (B2) language skills
  • Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your stay (approx. €12,000)
  • Score at least 6 points in the Opportunity Card points system (see below)
  • Be under age 40 for highest points (not mandatory)
  • Have no criminal record

The Chancenkarte uses a simple points-based system. You need 6 points to qualify. Here’s how you can score:

  • Bachelor/Master/PhD degree: 4 points
  • Vocational Training (min. 2 years, recognized): 3 points
  • Field shortage occupation: 1 extra point
2. Professional Experience
  • 5+ years work experience: 3 points
  • 2-5 years work experience: 2 points
  • Relevant German work experience: 1 point
3. Age
  • Under 35 years: 2 points
  • 35–40 years: 1 point
4. Language Skills
  • German B2 or higher: 3 points
  • German B1: 2 points

5. Previous Stay in Germany
  • Completed German education, training, or work: 1 point
6. Spouse's Eligibility
  • Spouse also eligible for Opportunity Card: 1 point
