Nursing Jobs in Germany

Recognition, B2 German and hospital vs elderly-care hiring, the three gates every foreign-trained nurse clears before a German ward.

Last updated: 13 September 2026 · Guide only, not a vacancy list.

The three gates: recognition, language, contract

  1. Recognition: file for equivalence (Anerkennung) with transcripts, syllabus hours, registration and experience proof, translated and legalised per Land rules. Deficit notices route into adaptation or exams, not rejection.
  2. Language: certified B2 for registration; plan B1 → B2 as a funded staging path where the employer supports it.
  3. Contract: hospital (acute) vs elderly-care (stationary/ambulant) tracks differ on shift models, dialect exposure and adaptation mentoring, match the track to your experience, not just the salary line.

Residence mechanics

  • Skilled-worker residence on recognised qualification plus qualifying nursing contract.
  • §16d recognition-phase residence where a deficit notice requires in-Germany adaptation.
  • §81a accelerated skilled-worker procedure where the employer uses it, shorter decision windows, same substantive bars.

Start from the Germany pillar; Ghanaian and Nigerian nurses should also read the origin-specific recognition notes.

FAQs

What is recognition (Anerkennung) for nurses?

Foreign nursing qualifications are assessed for equivalence with German training by the competent Land authority. Outcomes range from full equivalence to a deficit notice requiring an adaptation course or knowledge exam, the §16d residence title covers the recognition phase where applicable.

How much German do nurses need?

Generally B2 (Goethe/telc) for professional registration and hospital employment, with B1 as a staging milestone in some adapted pathways. Care-assistant entry roles may start lower but still require certified, supervised progression, confirm the current Land requirements.

Do German hospitals sponsor directly?

University hospitals, care groups and staffing partners recruit internationally, often with language and adaptation support. Sponsorship still requires recognised (or recognisable) qualifications plus a qualifying contract, it is never automatic.

Do you list real vacancies or guarantee placement?

No. This is a destination occupation guide, not a vacancy list. We provide eligibility assessment and application support; we never invent vacancies, employers, salaries or sponsorship.
