Critical Skills Employment Permit
For listed highly skilled occupations (including many healthcare, ICT and engineering roles) meeting the higher minimum salary. Advantages typically include no Labour Market Needs Test, faster family reunification and a quicker Stamp 4 / settlement path. Confirm your occupation is currently listed and the salary minimum for your category.
General Employment Permit
For occupations outside the ineligible list meeting the lower salary floor, generally with a Labour Market Needs Test (advertising) unless an exemption applies. Contracts, hours and remuneration must meet DETE standards; renewals and employer changes follow DETE rules.
Application sequence
- Match your occupation against the current Critical Skills and Ineligible lists on DETE.
- Secure a qualifying offer meeting salary, hours and contract conditions; complete the Labour Market Needs Test where required.
- File the online Employment Permit application (employer or employee) with contracts, qualifications, passport and fee evidence.
- On permit approval: entry visa steps for visa-required nationals, then arrival, GNIB/IRP registration and employment-start notification.
What we do, and what we never promise
- Eligibility assessment against current DETE lists, thresholds and test requirements.

Ireland work permit, FAQs
What are Ireland\u2019s two main employment permits?
The Critical Skills Employment Permit targets occupations on the Critical Skills Occupations List meeting higher salary thresholds, with faster family-reunification and settlement advantages. The General Employment Permit covers a broader range of occupations subject to salary minima and, in most cases, a Labour Market Needs Test. Lists and thresholds change, verify current DETE figures before applying.
Is Ireland in Schengen?
No. Ireland is an EU member state outside the Schengen Area and maintains the Common Travel Area with the UK. An Irish permit does not confer Schengen mobility; separate authorisation is needed for Schengen-state work.
Is a job offer required?
Yes. Both permits require a qualifying offer from an Irish employer meeting salary, contract and (for most General permits) advertising conditions. Self-directed job-search residence without an offer is not covered on this page.
Do you guarantee jobs, sponsorship or approval?
No. We provide eligibility assessment and application support. Employment depends on employer selection; permit and immigration decisions are made by the Irish authorities.
