The six stages
Enrol on an approved programme and hold a valid student residence. Keep attendance, progress and insurance compliant, and respect any work cap.
For regulated professions, start qualification recognition with the competent body during the programme. This is the single most common thing graduates leave too late.
Before your student residence expires, apply for the post-study job-search permit where the country offers one. Deadlines are strict and late applications can create a gap in lawful residence.
Find an employer able to sponsor and willing to meet the salary threshold for the route. The role must match the permit category, not just be any job.
The employer files the authorisation and you convert your residence. A gap or a wrong category at this stage can force a restart from outside the country.
Continuous qualifying residence then builds toward permanent residence and, later, citizenship subject to stay, language and civic conditions and to the state decision.
The two moments graduates lose the pathway
Waiting until after expiry to apply for the job-search permit can create a gap in lawful residence, which resets the settlement clock and, in some countries, forces an application from outside. Apply weeks before expiry, not after.
For regulated professions, recognition can take months and may require documents from your home institution. Graduates who begin after accepting an offer frequently lose the role because they cannot be authorised in time.
Both are sequencing failures rather than eligibility failures. Neither is caused by the applicant being unqualified, and both are avoidable with a calendar built at enrolment.
Does your study time count toward permanent residence?
This is the most consequential question on the pathway and the one most often answered incorrectly online. Countries differ substantially:
- Some count student residence partially, or at a reduced rate, toward the settlement qualifying period.
- Some exclude student residence entirely, meaning the clock only starts when the work permit begins.
- Some allow the qualifying period to include the post-study job-search residence, and some do not.
Because this changes the practical timeline by years, establish the rule for your specific destination before you enrol, not after you graduate.
FAQ
Does a European degree automatically give me a work permit?
No. It gives you a much stronger position and, in many countries, access to a post-study job-search residence. Converting that into a work permit still requires qualifying employment with an employer that can sponsor you, and the permit conditions must be met. Nothing about the pathway is automatic.
How long can I stay after graduating to look for work?
It varies by country, commonly a defined number of months on a job-search residence, and some countries allow extension under conditions. The allowance is set in national law and can change, so confirm the current position for your destination and apply before your student residence expires rather than after.
Do I need my qualification recognised to work in a regulated profession?
Yes, for regulated professions such as healthcare, engineering, teaching and licensed trades. Recognition is handled by the competent national body for the profession and can require documentation, fees and sometimes adaptation measures. Start recognition during your studies, not after graduation.
What salary do I need for the work permit conversion?
Most routes set a minimum, either the national minimum for the role or a higher threshold for skilled and shortage-occupation categories. If the offer falls below the threshold for the route you are applying under, the permit will not be approved even if the employer wants to hire you.
How long until permanent residence?
Typically several years of lawful continuous residence on qualifying permits, with conditions on stay, income, language and sometimes civic knowledge. Student years may count partially or not at all depending on the country, which materially changes the practical timeline. Confirm how study years are treated before you plan.
Is this cheaper than a work permit from my home country?
It is a different trade. Study requires tuition and living costs upfront but gives you local qualifications, language exposure and an in-country job search, which often converts better than applying from abroad. A direct work permit requires no tuition but depends on securing an employer from outside the country first.
