Two Entry Routes: Recognized Professional vs. Points System
Applicants can qualify through one of two distinct legal avenues:
1. Direct Recognition (No Points Needed)
Foreign nationals possessing a university degree or vocational qualification fully recognized as equivalent to a German qualification qualify directly without meeting the points grid.
2. Points Grid (Minimum 6 Points)
Candidates with a recognized foreign qualification (at least 2 years vocational training or university degree) plus basic German (A1) or English (B2) score points on age, language, work experience, and shortage occupations.
How the 6-Point Chancenkarte Scoring Matrix Works
- 4 Points: Full recognition of foreign professional qualification or qualification in a statutory shortage occupation (e.g. healthcare, STEM, teaching).
- 3 Points: At least 5 years of relevant professional experience within the past 7 years, OR German language skills at level B2.
- 2 Points: At least 2 years of relevant professional experience within the past 5 years, OR age under 35 at application date, OR German language skills at level B1.
- 1 Point: Age between 35 and 40, OR English skills at level C1, OR previous lawful residence in Germany for at least 6 consecutive months, OR qualification in a bottleneck occupation.
2026 Proof of Livelihood Benchmark & Direct Employment
Applicants must demonstrate proof of funds of at least €1,091 per month (typically €13,092 in a German Blocked Account) or present a formal Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung). Holders are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week in secondary employment and participate in two-week trial employment spells.
